1805 Democracy in action as the Lewis & Clark expedition conducts the first election in the West, granting voting privleges to Sacajewea (Shoshone Indian wife of interpreter Toussaint Charbonneau) and York (Captain Clark's black slave). The vote determines a camp move from the north side of the Columbia River to the more protected south side. From the latter point, constructionof their winter quarters,

1838 Having left Fort Walla Walla, a Hudson's Bay Company trading post on the Columbia River near Wallula Gap, the region's first Catholic missionaries, Fathers Francois Blanchett and Modeste Demers, arrive at Fort Vancouver.
1883 "Last spike" driven in the final gap between the O.R. & N. Railroad extending east from Portland and the Oregon shortline laid westward from the Union Pacific line. The ceremony occurred in Huntington near the Idaho border, marking the last of a dangerous project. The Dalles- Bonneville stretch overcame more construction problems, according to the crew,
than any similar length of track elsewhere in the U.S.

Northern Pacific sleeper car.

Seats range from 75¢ for standing room to $10 for box seats.
1969 Sasquatch (a Salish word for "wild man") footprints found near Colville. European fur trader David Thompson recorded a Bigfoot sighting in 1910.
