Services and Facilities Enhancement Project

Fort Walla Walla Museum
Carrying the Past into the Future

Keeping the distinctiveness of a changing community is accomplished by preserving its heritage.
Keeping it safe for future generations is everyones' duty.

Community Economic Benefits

Visiting teachers from Ghana help comprise the Museum's annual visitation
from more than 30 countries.

Fort Walla Walla Museum is, and has been for more than a decade, a serious contributor to the regional economy. For every dollar the Museum takes in, many more dollars circulate throughout the community. Visitors who enjoy the Museum’s modest admission fees also spend money on lodging, dining, and in a broad array of retail establishments.

Columbia River cruise tourists from across the country come to the Museum each year.

By presenting the region’s heritage to people from across the country and around the world, the Museum helps preserve the heritage of the community at a time when change may be disconcerting to many. The Museum also contributes to community distinctiveness already in place; the appeal of the local wine industry is enhanced by the community’s deep roots and vibrant heritage. Very few areas can claim a foundation of such a long-standing, livable community. Further, the Museum’s project adds a much needed family-oriented component to this industry.

The value of the Museum’s role to the community is partially illustrated by the more than 100 local businesses that support it annually with cash and in-kind services. The current Services and Facilities Enhancement Project is designed to raise the Museum to the level of a major regional tourist attraction that will increase the economic impact on our area several fold. The completion of the expansion project will elevate the institution to a level with the best developments in our area, strengthening the quality of life for people living in the region.

Every year, thousands of visitors enjoy the Museum's Living History performances.

Visitors to the Museum generate significant tourism revenues for the region. With a total contribution of almost $84 million to the local economy in 2007, tourism revenues set a seventh consecutive record in our county. Tax revenues benefit everyone in the community when they are applied to streets, parks, police, and fire protection. According to Dean Runyan Associates, the company that compiles tourism statistics for Washington State, the dollars brought into a community by out-of-town visitors are passed along eight times before leaving the area. Using this formula, the economic impact of the tourists drawn by the Museum is several million dollars each year. Recent surveys indicate the average local spending by our visitors is $2.5 million.

Beyond increasing the Museum’s payroll in coming years, many people will be employed by construction activity, as well as service employment within the region related to the multiplier effect of increased tourism. This project will increase our already substantial impact on the local economy through tourism. Your gift to the Services and Facilities Enhancement Project is critical to our success.
